Can You Drink Rainwater From Water Tanks?

Yes, you can drink rainwater from food-grade poly water tanks, but the tank is only one part of the system. Correct collection, treatment and ongoing water tank maintenance are all needed to ensure drinking quality.

How Do You Make Rainwater Safe to Drink?

Treatment of rainwater captured in tanks should be multi-staged:

  1. Coarse pre-filter: remove leaves, grit and large debris at the roof/gutter level; keep gutters and leaf strainers clear.
  2. First-flush diverter: divert the initial roof wash so the dirtiest water does not enter the tank.
  3. Fine filtration: pass water through a micron-level cartridge (typically 1–5 µm) to remove suspended particles.
  4. Activated-carbon stage: remove tastes, odours and many chemical residues that earlier filters miss.
  5. Disinfection: use UV sterilisation or correct chlorination to inactivate bacteria and viruses: note that UV requires clear, well-filtered water.
  6. Post-installation testing: test for E. coli and basic chemistry after commissioning and then at regular intervals (for example every 6–12 months).
  7. Ongoing servicing: replace cartridge filters and service UV lamps per manufacturer guidance, clean first-flush devices after storms and arrange periodic tank cleaning to remove sediment.

Roof runoff can carry bird droppings, insect matter and organic debris, and plumbing materials can leach metals. Immunocompromised people, infants and the elderly should avoid untreated tank water and use boiled or professionally treated water for drinking and cooking.

Bushman Tanks are made from food-grade, potable-approved polyethylene. Regional certification requirements may vary, so check local guidelines to confirm compliance in your area. Pair one of these tanks with correct filtration, disinfection and regular maintenance to ensure drinking-water safety. Contact Bushmans for a tailored recommendation.
