Best Practice – Utilising stormwater as an efficient water supply option

Stormwater is the water that originates from rainfall but does not necessarily soak into the ground, rather it is rain that runs off the rooves/gutters of buildings, houses and hardstand areas. This water then enters the stormwater drainage systems in urban areas and natural water courses in non-urban areas This flow can significantly increase the amount and intensity of runoff water.

Stormwater does not necessarily need to be negative if managed in the correct way. Indeed, as the population continues to grow in Australia and the world, the demand for clean water exceeds the availability of supply. Stormwater, if managed and harvested correctly, can in fact be an efficient water supply option.

The correct management of stormwater can have very positive benefits for communities. A large part of stormwater management involves the use of stormwater retention and detention tanks. These allow for water runoff to be captured and used for later use, as well as dispense water when it is needed.

The employment of stormwater tanks in stormwater systems can greatly reduce the pressure and intensity of water runoff during deluges. This reduces the cost of infrastructure required to handle these rainfall events. It also provides benefits to the local environment in mitigating the risk of flooding.
