Water Tanks are Becoming an Essential Part of the House
3/12/2010The number of homes that have a water tank installed has increased significantly over the last few years with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting that 26 percent of households are using rainwater tanks as a water source. This is up from 19 percent just 3 years ago. The largest number of tanks installed has been in Victoria and Queensland with other states having a significant increase tank installations. This increase was driven by the drought in eastern Australia, government subsidies and building codes.
Building codes are increasingly driving the installation of water tanks with many councils stipulating that a tank must be installed with renovations or the construction of a new home. The policies around the installation of water tanks aims to provide an additional source of water to the household and reduce the pressure on public infrastructure such as dams and aquifers, where water for the home has traditionally come from.
Complying with building codes is important but the real benefit of rain water is the water in the tank is yours to use how you please. It can be connected to the washing machine or toilet or it can be used around the yard to water the garden or wash the car. This freedom to use the water how you please is particularly important during periods of water restrictions where households are unable to water the garden or hose the path down.
Once the tank is installed the water is free with no ongoing water charges that come with metered water. All you have to do is ensure the downpipes and strainers are clean and if you have a pump attached there may be regular maintenance of the unit.
At Bushmans Tanks we build a quality tank that is designed to last and to provide water storage for many years. The tanks are made from virgin food grade raw materials and comply with all the relevant Australian standards.
