The number of homes that have a water tank installed has increased significantly over the last few years with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting that 26 percent of households are using rainwater tanks as a water source. This is up from 19 percent just 3 years ago. The largest number of tanks installed has been in Victoria and Queensland with other states having a significant increase tank installations. This increase was driven by the drought in eastern Australia, government subsidies and building codes.

Building codes are increasingly driving the installation of water tanks with many councils stipulating  that a tank must be installed with renovations or  the construction of a new home.  The policies around the installation of water  tanks aims to provide an additional source of water to the household and reduce the pressure on public infrastructure such as dams and aquifers, where water for the home has traditionally come from.
