Local councils and state government authorities have a requirement for building owners and tenants to manage the runoff water coming from their site. The type of storage tank required will depend on the type of operation and the amount of impurities and pollution in the runoff water. If the site is a commercial or industrial building or a warehouse with hard stand areas there will generally be a need to either slow down this runoff entering the stormwater system or in some cases there will be a requirement for this water to be treated prior to the water entering the stormwater system.
Retention and detention tanks will typically be required to be installed to manage this water runoff.
Detention Tank
A detention tank holds no water after the tank has emptied following a storm event by discharging water slowly into the storm water system at a set rate. These tanks aim overcome capacity constraints in the stormwater drainage system.

Retention Tank
A retention Tank is a tank that stores water for use after the storm has occurred and can be used around the site for operations within a factory, watering gardens of for washing vehicles or other onsite equipment. A Retention tank will also double up as and provide the storage and slow release or runoff water into the stormwater system. An example of this is a 30,000 litre tank could hold 15,000 litres for ongoing use around the factory or warehouse and there is 15,000 litres of storage that is slowly released to the stormwater system. This stormwater tank designed with fittings that facilitate both applications.
